Nitalia’s Blankets
When Nitalia was being treated at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis. TN., she new first hand how cold the kids would get during their treatments… especially radiation. So she asked her grandmom Conti if she could crochet some blankets for her friends at the hospital. Well, grandmom Conti did just that! She and several of her friends around the country made cozy homemade blankets for the kids…and Nitalia hand delivered thousands of them!
Over the last 3 years, (every Christmas season) we have delivered thousands of blankets to childrens hospitals across the country. Nitalia started this when she was a patient at St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. This season, we continue her mission of delivering blankets to children in treatment…but with an added bonus! This year we are adding PURPLE SCARVES for the kids! It all started when Nitalia’s sister Aviona was given a scarf by her teacher Mrs. Louise Bunker at Cocopah Middle School. Mrs. Bunker had a Purple Nitalia’s Walk t-shirt crocheted into a PURPLE SCARF by her friend Moira! Aviona LOVED it and so did all the children that have seen it!. So Aviona approached Mrs. Bunker and asked if she would like to help this year with Nitalias Blanket drive by adding scarves to the delivery. Not only did Mrs. Bunker help…She and her husband Craig, reached out to their friend Ron McPherson over at The Antigua Group and had a shipment of over 500 PURPLE TEE SHIRTS donated and delivered! We can’t thank them enough for the unbelievably generous donation! And we can’t thank The Antigua Group enough for the beautiful PURPLE SHIRTS! SO, SO, Generous! The kids at the hospitals are going to LOVE these!
We are now recruiting teams of crocheters to help make the blankets, scarves, booties, and hats. If you or someone you know can volunteer to help contact us by clicking here. Kids and adults alike can participate in the creation of the scarves.
Now for the blankets…
We had a GREAT delivery of blankets in 2011! Thank you to all that helped support, make, deliver, and pay for the OVER 1000 Purple Packages that were hand delivered to kids in the hospital fighting cancer!! We are looking forward to an EVEN BETTER 2012!!!
The 2011 Nitalia’s Blanket Delivery!
We are currently collecting NEW blankets for our next delivery. You can send blankets to: The Purple Society 6104 E. Clinton St., Scottsdale, Arizona 85254.Remember every blanket starts with just one stitch in the chain, please consider becoming a part of our blanket of hope.
We need soft cozy blankets of any size, color and patterns. Think children aged Infant to late teens. Hats, again all colors and sizes, must be cozy and soft no hard brims or hard scratchy materials. Socks, slipper socks, scarves and gloves. All must be new, clean and ready to make a child warm and cozy!
How else can I help ?
Please pass our website address along to your friends, neighbors, religious fellowships, Post a sign in your local craft store, Supermarket, Day Care Center, Gym, ect. , and then become a blanket drop off or collection site for us. Start your own Nitalia’s Blankets group, gather your friends and family and get together to make blankets, or to collect, sort and send them to us.
This is a wonderful way for teenagers to do some community service, and another way for families and friends to get together and share in the hope of this project.
